BOSTON, MA – Jamaica Plain Progressives, (JPP) a prominent grassroots organization in Boston, has endorsed Senator Ed Markey in his re-election campaign.
Active for over a decade, JPP recently played an important role in the elections of Representative Ayanna Pressley, State Rep. Nika Elugardo and District Attorney Rachel Rollins. The group’s endorsement of Ed Markey, highlights its judgement that his record of championing healthcare, the environment, immigration, net neutrality and workers rights merits a return to Congress. JPP formed to allow local activists a unified voice in bringing about progressive political change.
“Senator Markey believes health care is a right and not a privilege, he is the co-sponsor of the Green New Deal, and has worked tirelessly to support immigrant and refugee communities. We believe Senator Markey has proven himself and represents our values,” said Annie Rousseau, co-chair of the JPP.
As the son of a union leader, Senator Markey believes in legislating policies which benefit the entire community. He graduated from Boston College and earned a law degree from Boston College Law School. He served in the army reserves from 1968-73. In 1976, he was elected U.S. Representative for Massachusetts’ then 7th Congressional District where he served until elected Senator in 2013.
“I am honored to have earned this endorsement from JP Progressives, a group whose progressive values on equal access to affordable health care, environmental and economic stability, and lifting people out of poverty, align with my own. JP Progressives’ rigorous endorsement criteria reflect qualities I am proud to practice in my work, including a commitment to building the progressive movement, expanding democratic discourse, and advancing the goal of racial justice. It’s these values that are held by JP Progressives and the candidates they endorse that will make meaningful change for a better future,” Senator Markey said.
As co-sponsor of the Green New Deal Ed Markey is a leader in addressing climate change as well as the need to guide the economy toward full employment in green jobs. Markey and Senator Elizabeth Warren recently introduced legislation to force airlines to refund billions of dollars to purchasers of cancelled airline travel. Senator Markey is advocating in the Senate for providing every American $2,000 a month during the pandemic crisis. Learn more at https://www.edmarkey.com/
